What’s The Difference Between A Facial Oil And Serum?

Although Serums and Oils are often grouped together and can be confused as the same thing they are most definitely not. Facial serums are used to target specific skin concerns, whereas oils are primarily intended to moisturize. Serums can be a blend of oils but typically serums are lighter weight. In a nutshell, ‘serums are used to bring more moisture into the skin, while oils are great for locking in that hydration’. Reference from Dr Lain.

How Should I Incorporate Them Into My Skincare Routine

The general consensus is that facial oils are used to lock in moisture and so you should apply them LAST in your skin care routine. So cleanse, tone, moisturise and finally oil. That way the oil will help lock the moisturiser into your skin. If you apply an oil first then you are preventing other products being absorbed into your skin.

There are differing opinions on whether you should use oil every morning and night. I love going to bed after applying my favourite oil but if I’m applying mineral powder foundation immediately in the morning I tend to skip the oil, however it’s really personal preference.

Serums however are usually applied after cleansing and toning and right before your moisturiser. You can use both serums and oils together also, it’s just about correct layering. So feel free to add serum into the earlier steps of your skin care routine and finish with a facial oil to lock the moisture in.
