BENEFITS OF ORGANIC TAMPONS
Perhaps you already know what conventional tampons are made of and that they are by no means as innocent or as pristine as they look? Making the switch to organic prevents any side effects and gives peace of mind too.
What’s the difference between conventional and organic tampons?
A woman uses over 12,000 tampons in a lifetime, yet regular and by regular we mean non natural/non certified organic tampons may include unwanted nasties like polyethylene, polypropylene, rayon, bleach and cotton that is grown using pesticides. Certainly not the kind of things you’d want anywhere near some of the most delicate skin and organs in your body. The best way to be sure if your tampon is safe is to choose Certified Organic so you know that it’s been officially assessed. Being made from 100% natural cotton, organic tampons can also decompose more quickly than conventional ones, so they are much better for the environment too.
Can I rely on organic at that time of the month?
The Therapeutic Goods Association requirement is that all tampons meet the same absorbency levels, so there is no difference in the absorbency of organic tampons and conventional brands. Organic tampons only use pure cotton, so they tend to be a bit bigger and denser to match the absorbency of synthetic materials.
Here’s an experiment you can do yourself to see the difference. Pull apart a conventional tampon and an organic one – the organic one is much harder to pull apart while the conventional one can easily be shredded. The reason for this is that organic tampons are made with dense, virgin, long fibre cotton, unlike the low quality, cheap-to-produce short fibre found in non-organic brands. Another useful experiment to spot the difference is to drop two different tampons into two glasses of water: watch as the organic tampon stays intact and the synthetic one falls apart, spreading fibres and chemicals into the water. Do we really want to run the risk of exposing our bodies to these chemicals which can potentially be absorbed into the bloodstream?
How can you avoid toxic tampons?
Toxic tampons are easily avoided by choosing tampons made from Certified Organic cotton which hasn’t been sprayed with pesticides. TOM 100% Organic Cotton tampons are Australian Certified Organic and have been tested by a panel of women, who said using organic gave greater peace of mind and made periods more tolerable and less irritating. According to TOM Organic the likelihood of developing an unpleasant rash during menstruation is significantly reduced. TOM also tell us that organic tampons can also decrease the risk of Toxic Shock Syndrome. To date there have been no reported cases of toxic tampon shock by women who have made the switch to organic.
