Supplements to help relieve symptoms of Arthritis

Man suffering with Arthritis in his hand

Today, Monday 12th October is World Arthritis Day.

Arthritis is inflammation of the joints – it can affect one or multiple joints.  Two of the most common types of arthritis are osteoarthritis (OA) and rheumatoid arthritis (RA).

Rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis both cause joint pain, stiffness, and limited range of motion, but the two diseases are distinct in their root cause and treatment. Rheumatoid arthritis is an autoimmune condition where a person’s own immune system attacks their joints, causing inflammation.

The symptoms of arthritis develop over time or sometimes they also appear suddenly.  This condition usually occurs in adults that are over the age of 65 and women are more susceptible than men.

There are various supplements available that have been proven effective in the treatment of arthritis-related conditions.

Gamma Linolenic Acid

GLA is a type of omega-6 fatty acid that the body converts into anti-inflammatory chemicals. One study showed that among 56 patients with active RA have shown significant improvement in managing joint pain, stiffness, and grip strength after six months after taking supplements with GLA.  When combined with fish oil, it can significantly reduce the need for pain relievers.

Hemp is an amazing source of Omega fatty acids.  Use can use hemp seeds or hemp oil in cooking or dressing your salads or even topically on arthritis affected area.  You can also mix hemp powder in your favorite smoothies.

Fish Oil (Omega-3 fatty acids EPA and DHA)

Omega-3s can block inflammatory cytokines and prostaglandins and convert it into powerful anti-inflammatory chemicals called resolvins. Studies have shown that fish oil can significantly decrease joint tenderness and stiffness in RA patients and reduce NSAID use.

Chia seeds are also a good source of Omega 3.  This ingredient is super easy to use and can be added to almost anything.  You can use it in as an added ingredient in your cereal, smoothies, or sprinkle it over your favorite dessert or salad.

You can also take Omega 3 supplements like these vegan capsules from Green Nutritionals.

Tumeric/Curcumin (Curcuma longa)

Curcumin is the chemical present in turmeric that can help reduce joint pain and swelling by blocking inflammatory cytokines and enzymes. Research has shown that turmeric supplements can help with long-term improvement in pain and function in patients with knee OA.

Turmeric can be used as an added ingredient to cooking or baking.  You can also easily add turmeric powder in shakes and smoothies.

Avocado-soybean Unsaponifiables (ASU)

ASU blocks pro-inflammatory chemicals helping prevent deterioration of synovial cells which line joints and helps regenerate normal connective tissue.  There are many ways to incorporate avocado and soybean into your diet as an added supplement.  You can use avocado oil topically as a massage oil for joints and muscles. While soybeans can be added to your favorite recipes or can be enjoyed as a quick, hot cup using Genmai aka Miso soup.

Other supplements that are proven to help relieve symptoms and manage pain associated with rheumatoid arthritis (RA), osteoarthritis (OA) and other arthritis-related conditions are SAM-e (S-adenosylmethionine), Boswellia Serrate (Indian frankincense), Capsaicin (Capsicum frutescens), Cat’s Claw (Uncaria tomentosa), Ginger (Zingiber officinale) and CBD (Cannabidiol).
