Juicing for Cellulite

Cellulite is skin that looks dimply and uneven, and somewhat resembles the skin of an orange. It is something that a lot of us have ourselves or have seen on others, even on healthy people.
Cellulite can be caused by a few different things, such as toxic waste or lack of fascia structure. Toxic waste can be a result of metabolic waste that is caught up in the cells, mainly in the subcutaneous fat layer under the skin. Metabolic waste is a natural process like breathing, eating, drinking, and digesting food. These systems can do a fantastic job at cleaning and filtering, but if you consume a lot of processed and high sodium foods, are exposed to many toxins and chemicals from cosmetics, plastics and pollution day in and day out, then these systems can become overburdened and store metabolic waste (toxic waste) in the fat cells. The body does this to protect itself so that these toxins aren't flowing freely around it.

Cellulite is usually more prevalent in women than men and is commonly found on hips, thighs, buttocks and breasts.
There can be many possible causes and factors of cellulite, such as:

A poor diet

High sodium foods like processed meats, bacon and cheeses cause water retention which will cause excess swelling. Salt is known to be one of the main causes of that rippling effect we see with cellulite. Processed products often contain inflammatory foods such as sugar, fat, and salt. So, these should also be reduced if you wish to reduce or avoid cellulite – that means soft drinks, crisps, baked goods and snack foods.

Inactivity and a sedentary lifestyle

Another reason why cellulite or toxic build up can happen is from a lack of lymphatic moment or stimulation via exercise or body massage. The lymphatic system doesn’t have an automatic pump like blood, so it needs manual pumping via physical movement and exercise. Without this movement, the lymphatic system cannot filter out waste and it becomes clogged and stagnant. In turn, it dumps wastes into the fat cells for protection. Cellulite can also be the result of the connective tissue, the fascia being tight and restricted. Fascia issues can arise from sitting for long periods of time, lack of movement and exercise or stimulation of the area.

For many of us, our work life may involve sitting at a desk for extended periods. However, regular exercise and movement can help reduce body fat, which makes cellulite less noticeable. It’s important to make being active a daily priority whether that be a walk, joining a gym, foam rolling, rebounding on a trampoline, or doing a yoga or pilates class.

Hormonal imbalances

It’s worth checking out your hormone levels if you find that you are both active and lead a healthy lifestyle and still struggle with cellulite. Hormones such as estrogen, insulin, prolactin, noradrenaline and thyroid hormones all contribute to the development of cellulite. So perhaps liaise with your doctor to rule out any underlying issues.

How can you treat/reduce cellulite?

Juicing for Cellulite – Along with a balanced diet, juicing could be an effective method to help reduce/avoid cellulite. Juicing daily will enable you to include certain fruits/vegetables into your daily diet. Try and choose ingredients with antioxidant, cleansing and blood building properties to facilitate the removal of toxins such as beetroot, orange, celery, ginger, kale and lemon.

Pineapple and Cucumber Juice

2 slices of fresh pineapple
1 cucumber

Pineapple and cucumber will both help to cleanse your colon in a natural way. Both ingredients are diuretics and so can help to eliminate toxins that accumulate in your body and cause the appearance of cellulite. They can also repair skin tissues which have been damaged.

Classic Celery Juice

Celery acts as a natural diuretic, stimulating the kidneys to flush excess water from the body. It is often recommended to help eradicate cellulite as it encourages the exchange of carbohydrates in the body. Due to its high Vitamin B content it also has a soothing effect on skin, hair, nails and eyes.  Just cut up your celery and juice!

Carrot and Orange Juice

1-2 large oranges
2 carrots

Oranges contain high amounts of methoxylated bioflavonoids. These are natural chemicals that help fix imbalances in cell development and fat distribution, which could eventually lead to cellulite development one day. Studies have shown that carotenoids found in foods like carrots inhibit fat accumulation and may also help fight inflammation and protect collagen. This means consuming carrots can help to promote healthier, firmer skin leading to less cellulite.

Tips to help reduce cellulite:

Stay hydrated

Hydrating your body keeps your skin cells looking fresh and renewed, which can reduce the appearance of cellulite. Start by drinking a glass of water first thing in the morning, before anything else and then continue throughout the day to ensure you remain hydrated. You can also add lemon too.

Dry Body Brushing

Dry body brushing has been part of Ayurvedic traditional medicine for centuries and it's another way to help eliminate toxins from the body. Dry skin brushing is when you use a specialised bristle brush that you brush and rub on your skin that exfoliates the outer layer of skin and stimulates blood circulation. Dry body brushing helps get rid of dead skin cells, regenerate new skin cells, and keep your skin active in assisting the body's cleansing process.

Once I created a routine of dry skin brushing a few times a week, I saw drastic improvement in my own cellulite and skin tone. It's a great routine that only takes five minutes!

Enviro Care Dry Bamboo Body Brush is made using natural ingredients.

Try these dry body brushing tips:

  • Start brushing from your feet, working your way up to your neck then down your chest with three firm
strokes in each spot, always stroking towards your heart. This creates movement of the blood and lymphatic fluid (there are some great videos on YouTube demonstrating the proper techniques).
  • Dry skin brushing is best done just before exercise, yoga, rebounding, walking or sweating in an infrared sauna.
  • It is best done on clean skin without any cosmetic products, deodorant or lotions.
  • Dry skin brushing is perfect before a warm salt bath, as it aids the absorption of salts into the body and
    further promotes skin rejuvenation
  • After dry brushing your skin, go and get sweaty, either with exercise or in an infrared sauna as this will stimulate the
skin, blood and lymphatic system even more which will enhance its benefits
  • Have a shower post dry body brushing to rinse all the dead skin cells and and scrub and hydrate your skin with an exfoliating coffee scrub

Infrared Sauna

Infrared sauna sessions are one good way to reduce cellulite. Exposure to light at red and near-infrared wavelengths encourages the body to detoxify and get rid of fat as well as to rebuild collagen connective tissue. Collagen is key to helping skin elasticity, which reduces the accumulation of cellulite.

Being in the sauna is one of the best ways to stimulate and

cleanse the lymphatic system. When in a far infrared sauna the vibration that infrared emits pushes and moves the lymphatic
system around, getting rid of stagnation. This is why it's so complemented with self-massage techniques like gua sha,
fascia rolling, cupping and dry skin brushing, these tools only excel and compliment the lymphatic clean.

Exfoliating Body Scrubs and Coffee Scrubs

Exfoliating body scrubs and coffee scrubs can help remove dead skin cells and provide a smoother, more even look to the skin.

The caffeine in coffee could help to dilate blood vessels and reduce the appearance of skin dimples and cellulite. The skin may also appear tighter from the stimulating effects of caffeine by improving blood flow as well as eliminating excess water retention.

While body scrubs and coffee body scrubs won't get rid of cellulite entirely, they can help to reduce its appearance.

You can create your own body scrub like the one below, or purchase a body scrub like the Giovanni Hot Chocolate Sugar Scrub.

Cellulite Scrub

You will need:
1/2 cup Ground coffee beans
1/2 (roughly) cup cacao butter
6 drops of essential oils such as peppermint, cedarwood and juniper

Body Massage

Weleda Cellulite Oil Birch is a great oil I love to use and massage into the skin as it contains a combination of plant oils and plant extracts such as Birch to help reduce the appearance of cellulite and overall work to improve the skin tone appearance.

You can also use other oils such as castor oil, coconut oil, and jojoba oil to massage into the skin.
