How Infrared Saunas Have Benefited Me and Why You Need One

I have been using an infrared sauna for over 5 years now, and it still remains as part of my non-negotiables because I see and feel the many benefits that a sauna provides.

I loved going into a traditional wood sauna as a child as I enjoyed the warmth and how it made me feel so rejuvenated once I got out.
I was lucky to have an infrared sauna in my apartment complex when I first moved out of my parents home. I would use it almost every day and then plunge into the pool for a swim afterwards. It was during this time that I really began to see the noticeable benefits that a sauna can provide and I began to do more research around the science of it all which I found quite fascinating.

I still continue to use an Infrared sauna weekly (sometimes 2-3 times a week), because using an Infrared Sauna has drastically improved not only my health, but also my life on all levels.

Below are some of my personal benefits from using an Infrared Sauna. I also hear of the same benefits from the Love Your Health team, my friends and family, and people within the health and wellness community that have used an Infrared Sauna and have seen the benefits too.

Detoxification

I’ve used Infrared Saunas here and there over the years, but I started using them regularly (almost daily) in 2018 as part of a detoxification protocol after I had my breast implants removed. At the time, I had also been exposed to toxic black mould in my then home, so my Doctors and health professionals advised me to start using an Infrared Sauna to help support my body in ridding the toxins, especially post-surgery.

The far infrared heat in an Infrared Sauna can help in detoxing the body both inside and out by promoting the elimination of chemicals and toxins from the body. Toxins come in many different shapes and sizes, these can be things like poisons, plastics, mycotoxins, radiation, carcinogenic heavy metals, toxic substances from food processing, fragrances, dirt and dust, pollution, lactic acid, free fatty acids, subcutaneous fat associated with fatigue and aging, and excess sodium causing hypertension. Far infrared heat can eliminate these toxins inside your body that are making you feel sick, fatigued and even causing you to hold on to unwanted weight.

I feel comfortable and more at ease knowing that the Infrared Sauna can be a place that can help rid the toxins I have absorbed not only from the once toxic load that I put in my body, but also the toxins that I absorb today in society.

Assists My Lymphatic System

Being in an Infrared Sauna is one of the best ways to stimulate and cleanse the lymphatic system. The vibration that Infrared emits pushes and moves the lymphatic system around, which gets rid of stagnation. This is why being in an Infrared Sauna is so well complimented with self-massage, cupping, and dry skin brushing as these only compliment the lymphatic cleanse.

Supports My Immune System

The one amazing thing about a well functioning lymphatic system is immunity. If our lymph fluid is moving strong and fast, then it has easy access throughout the body to pick up and take out the bad guys. If our lymph is blocked and the lymphatic system is slow and sluggish, then you may have immune problems with frequent colds and flu etc.

Balances My Hormones

The one major organ involved in regulating hormones is the liver. The liver can become congested and overburdened if it has to deal with a lot of toxins and heavy metals. Using an infrared sauna helps to support detoxification, reduces inflammation, and helps to relieve the liver and remove some of the toxins and heavy metals through the sweat, one of the main detox elimination pathways. This will then allow the liver to function at it’s best and become more efficient with regulating hormones properly.

Improves My Sleep

Infrared Saunas are calm and relaxing, which makes it easier for me to fall asleep, especially if I’ve had a busy or stressful day.

Makes My Skin Glow

After using the Infrared Sauna, my skin always has a really nice glow that always looks clean, clear and healthy. Because the infrared heat produces a healthy sweat, the glowing skin is just a natural byproduct of expelling toxins, dead skin cells, and embedded impurities deep in the skin.
When I began using an Infrared Sauna, I saw improvement in acne, cellulite, eczema and even body odour (you’ll become aware of the certain smell of toxins that are released during an Infrared Sauna, I was shocked by the ‘chemical smells’ post breast implant removal surgery).
Some other people have noted they have seen an improvement in other skin conditions like clogged pores, rashes, psoriasis, scars, and skin tone.
Infrared heat also increases blood circulation, which can aid in rejuvenating your skin and leave you with beautiful and glowing skin.

Some Infrared Saunas offer LED Light Therapy. If I am using one that does have this extra add on, then I like to use the Red Light as it has loads of benefits. One benefit is that it can help to stimulate collagen and elastin production.

Diminishes My Cellulite

Infrared saunas have definitely helped with the decrease in the appearance of my cellulite (alongside a healthy lifestyle and clean diet, of course!)

The exposure to infrared wavelengths encourages the body to detoxify, getting rid of any excess toxins and unwanted fat cells which causes cellulite to appear on the body.

Reduces Stress and Anxiety

When when my stress and cortisol levels have been at an all time high, an Infrared Sauna has been a place where I can relax and unwind. I feel I am able to handle stressful situations better due to a decrease in the production of cortisol (our stress hormone) and boost my happy hormones (such as dopamine and serotonin). During the pandemic to help with anxiety, I would regularly use an Infrared Sauna and I am very grateful that I had access to one at the time.

Helps Me To Release Stored Emotions

When I first started using an Infrared Sauna I’ll be honest, the sauna made me feel uncomfortable, agitated, and like I wanted to cry for no reason. I had to let it release as at that time I didn’t know how to properly release my emotions.
Some people not only hold on to chemical waste, but also an emotional toxic load (yes, emotions get stored in the body too).

A sauna is a place to unwind and literally wipe away all the baggage we hold onto, physically and emotionally. Allow the layers to peel off to reveal a deeper part of yourself every time you have a sauna session.

Relieves Joint and Muscle Pain

I have suffered from arthritis and joint pain over the years due to my Fibromyalgia. Unfortunately in the past, my body had a negative autoimmune reaction to my breast implants I had at the time which was causing inflammation in my body, thus the arthritis and joint pain symptoms. Using an Infrared sauna helped me with these symptoms immensely and it still does to this day. This is because infrared sauna heat works by penetrating the joints, muscles and tissues, which in turn increases body circulation and oxygen flow.
If you suffer from aches, muscle discomfort, joint pain and joint spasms than using an infrared sauna may just benefit you too.
I also love to use an infrared sauna after a workout such as strength training, pilates or yoga as the infrared sauna works to assist in muscle recovery.

Other benefits of an Infrared Sauna include:
  • Better flexibility
  • Assists with wound healing
  • Improved cardiovascular health
  • Increases natural killer cells to be released into the bloodstream
  • Assist in the maintenance of optimal weight

My Tips For Using an Infrared Sauna

Preparing for an Infrared Sauna:
  • Dry body brushing
  • Make sure you are well hydrated
  • Start small and build tolerance gradually - If you are a beginner with using an Infrared Sauna, your body may not be able to tolerate a 45min to an hour long sauna session at first. Take it slow and start with a shorter session (15 to 30 minutes), then work your way up to longer and hotter sessions

    During an Infrared Sauna Session:
    • Self-meditation or guided meditation
    • Self massage (you can even use specific tools like gua-sha or cupping)
    • Jot down notes and thoughts
    • Hydrating with water, fresh juice, iced tea or a smoothie
    • Savasana
    • Deep breathing
    • Plan to wear minimal, loose-fitting clothing like shorts and a singlet, or even swimwear

    Post Infrared Sauna:
    • Keep yourself hydrated by continuing to drink lots of water and other hydrating liquids
    • Have a cold shower - I love to use charcoal soap while having a shower as a way to really pull those toxins out after a sauna. Ethique's Charcoal Oatmeal Bodywash Bar is formulated using 100% naturally-derived and sustainably sourced ingredients combining soothing oatmeal with kaolin and charcoal for effective deep cleansing.
    • Take a binder - If you are using the infrared sauna as a detox protocol, sometimes it can be a good idea to take a binder to support detoxification by mopping up the mobilising toxins that have been released not only through your sweat, but also through your urine and stool. You want to make sure that the toxins continue outward and don’t recirculate back into you. Some examples of binders that I use are activated charcoal powder (take away from vitamins and minerals), clays such as zeolite and bentonite clay, silica, and chlorella.
    • Drink electrolytes to replace any electrolytes that may have been lost whilst sweating

If you’re able to invest in an Infrared Sauna for your home, then I highly recommend it!
Once you get into a flow of using an Infrared sauna it will feel absolutely amazing and you will soon crave being in there by how light and healthy you start to feel when you get out.
